Asphalt Calculator
Tons of hot mix asphalt for a driveway, path or lot, calculated from real mix densities rather than a single rounded average.
How much asphalt do I need?
Asphalt is bought by the ton. The calculation is area times thickness to get cubic feet, then multiplied by the density of the mix. Standard hot mix surface course runs about 145 pounds per cubic foot.
The rule of thumb worth remembering is that one ton of hot mix covers roughly 80 square feet at 2 inches compacted. So a 20 by 40 foot driveway, which is 800 square feet, needs about 10 tons for a 2 inch surface layer.
| Area | 2 in thick | 3 in thick | 4 in thick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 6.0 tons | 9.1 tons | 12.1 tons |
| 800 sq ft | 9.7 tons | 14.5 tons | 19.3 tons |
| 1,000 sq ft | 12.1 tons | 18.1 tons | 24.2 tons |
| 2,000 sq ft | 24.2 tons | 36.3 tons | 48.3 tons |
Based on 145 lb per cubic foot for standard hot mix surface course.
Mix type changes the weight
Not all asphalt weighs the same. Binder course, which is the coarser layer underneath, is slightly denser than surface course. Porous asphalt, designed to let water drain through it, is considerably lighter because it is full of deliberate void space.
| Mix | lb per cubic foot | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Hot mix surface course | 140 to 150 | The top layer you see and drive on |
| Hot mix binder / base | 142 to 155 | The structural layer beneath the surface |
| Cold patch | 135 to 145 | Pothole repair, sold in bags |
| Porous asphalt | 115 to 135 | Permeable paving where drainage is required |
Layers for a driveway that lasts
A residential asphalt driveway is not one pour. A proper build is:
- Compacted subgrade. The native soil, graded and rolled. If it is soft clay it needs to be excavated and replaced, and this is where most driveway failures actually begin.
- Aggregate base, 6 to 8 inches. Crusher run, compacted in lifts. This carries the load. Skimping here is the most common cost cut and it shows up as cracking within three years.
- Binder course, 2 to 3 inches. Coarse asphalt that provides strength.
- Surface course, 1.5 to 2 inches. Finer mix for a smooth, sealed driving surface.
For a full depth residential drive you are looking at 3 to 4 inches of asphalt total over 6 to 8 inches of stone. An overlay on existing sound asphalt is usually just 1.5 to 2 inches of surface course.
What it costs
Hot mix asphalt material runs $100 to $150 per ton at the plant, moving with oil prices, which means quotes from six months ago may not hold.
Installed, residential driveway paving generally lands between $3 and $7 per square foot depending on your region, how much excavation is needed and whether the base has to be rebuilt. For an 800 square foot driveway that is roughly $2,400 to $5,600.
Resurfacing an existing driveway that has a sound base is much cheaper, often $2 to $4 per square foot, because you are only paying for the overlay.
Why this is not a DIY job
Worth being direct about this. Hot mix asphalt leaves the plant at around 300F and has to be laid and compacted before it cools past roughly 185F. Below that it stops consolidating properly and you get a porous surface that fails fast.
That means a paver, a roller and a crew that can move quickly, all scheduled against a delivery window. There is no realistic homeowner version of this. Use this calculator to sanity check a contractor quote, to work out whether the tonnage on your estimate matches the area they measured, and to compare bids on a like for like basis.
If a quote lists tonnage well above what this calculator produces for your area and thickness, ask what thickness they are pricing. If it lists a lot less, ask the same question. That one conversation catches most of the gap between a good bid and a bad one.
Common questions
How many tons of asphalt do I need for a driveway?
About one ton per 80 square feet at 2 inches compacted. A 20 by 40 foot driveway is 800 square feet, so roughly 10 tons for a 2 inch surface layer. A full depth build at 3 to 4 inches needs proportionally more.
How much does a ton of asphalt cover?
Roughly 80 square feet at 2 inches thick, 54 square feet at 3 inches and 40 square feet at 4 inches, based on standard hot mix at 145 pounds per cubic foot.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Three to four inches of asphalt total for a residential driveway, laid as a binder course plus a surface course, over 6 to 8 inches of compacted aggregate base. An overlay on sound existing asphalt is usually 1.5 to 2 inches.
How much does a ton of asphalt weigh per cubic yard?
Hot mix asphalt runs about 145 pounds per cubic foot, which works out to roughly 3,915 pounds or just under 2 tons per cubic yard. Porous mixes are lighter at around 115 to 135 pounds per cubic foot.
Can I lay asphalt myself?
Not hot mix. It arrives around 300F and must be spread and rolled before it drops below about 185F, which needs a paver, a roller and a crew working to a delivery window. Cold patch in bags is fine for filling potholes, but a driveway is a contractor job.
These figures are planning estimates. Bulk material weight shifts with moisture and screen size, and suppliers round differently, so confirm the final quantity with your yard before you order.
